About the archive

What The Lantern Archives Is

The Lantern Archives runs a persistent, procedurally generated fantasy history live, 24 hours a day, with a continuous lofi soundtrack playing alongside it. There is no script and no human writer steering events. A simulation advances kingdoms, rulers, wars, and notable figures one tick at a time, and every event it generates is recorded permanently to a public archive. Leave it running in the background to study, work, or just relax to.

01 The simulation

How a world runs

Each cycle begins with a small set of newly generated kingdoms: rulers, cultures, terrain, and starting relationships. From there the simulation advances in discrete steps, resolving succession, diplomacy, famine, plague, war, and the occasional dragon or villain, purely from the state of the world at that moment. Nothing is pre-written. A cycle can run for centuries of in-world time before it fails, resets, or is sealed as a notable record.

What gets kept

Notable figures, major wars, and cycles that reach a catastrophic end are scored for how much history they contain, and the most significant ones are retained as sealed public records under Archives. A cycle's outcome, its notable figures, and its terminal event all stay browsable long after the simulation has moved on to the next world.
